Toxicity of elemental sulfur for brucellae.

چکیده
In previous reports we have described the toxicity of certain peptones and amino acids, particularly cystine, for brucellae (Schuhardt, Rode, Foster, and Oglesby, 1949; Schuhardt, Rode, and Oglesby, 1949). Subsequently, we found and reported that cystine per se is not toxic for these organims, and proved that the observed toxicity of autoclaved cystine is due to a heat-induced breakdown product of cystine (Schuhardt, Rode, Oglesby, and Lankford, 1950). This report deals with the results of experiments designed to determine the nature of this toxic breakdown product of cytine.

The cultivation of brucellae on chemically defined media.
The selection of a chemically defined medium for nutritional or physiological studies depends upon the objectives of the investigator. The four chemically defined media for the cultivation of brucellae that have been reported during the past decade have tended toward one or the other of two objectives. Either multiple amino acid nitrogen source media have been devised and used to establish the ...
متن کاملCatalytic reduction of SO2 with CH4 to elemental sulfur: A comparative analysis of alumina, copper-alumina and nickel-alumina catalysts
The catalytic reduction of sulfur dioxide with methane to form elemental sulfur has been studied. Al2O3, Cu-Al2O3 and Ni-Al2O3 were examined as catalysts and their performances were compared in terms of SO2 conversion and selectivity. Performance of the catalyst extremely enhanced when nickel and copper were added as promoters. The effects of temperature, SO2/CH4 molar ratio, and reaction...
متن کاملSynthesis and Characterization of a Novel Nanoporous Composite Based on Elemental Sulfur and Graphitic Mesoporous Carbon
A novel sulfur nanocomposite was fabricated based on graphitic mesoporous carbon. The graphitic mesoporous carbon was synthesized using sucrose as carbon precursor, nano CaCO3 as a hard template and nickel nitrate as graphitization catalyst. The structural properties of the prepared material were characterized using powder X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), N2-adsorption/de...
متن کاملEffect of EDTA Chelate, Cow Manure, Elemental Sulfur Application and Thiobacillus Inoculant on Cd, Zn and Fe Phytoremediation Efficiency in a Cd-Polluted Soil
Background and Purpose: The Phytoremediation efficiency of heavy metals is one of the important points in environmental studies. This research was conducted to investigate the effect of cow manure, elemental sulfur, and EDTA on Cd uptake by Indian mustard in a Cd-polluted soil in the presence of Thiobacillus thiooxidans. Materials and Methods: Treatments consisted of applying cow manure (0, 5,...
متن کاملOxidative stress and change in plant metabolism of maize (Zea mays L.) growing in contaminated soil with elemental sulfur and toxic effect of zinc
Responses of the chlorophyll, antioxidant enzymes and lipid peroxidation in maize growing in soil with zinc (Zn) and elemental sulfur (S) were studied. The results showed that sulfur alleviated the high toxicity of Zn and increased the concentration of chlorophyll. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) increased significantly and catalase (CAT) activity significantly...
